Can I double glaze my sash windows with slim double glazing

Double glazing period sash windows with slim double glazing

A frequently asked inquiry pertains to the feasibility of installing slim double glazing on original sash windows, along with the associated advantages and potential alterations to the windows’ appearance.

Let’s begin with the first question can I double glaze my original period sash windows and the simple answer to that is yes you can. Kensington’s specialize in the installation of slim double glazing to period sash windows we can double glaze Victorian sash windows or multi pane Georgian sash windows.

Double glazing with slim double glazing will massively improve the thermal performance of your sliding sash windows and increase the amount of heat you retain by roughly five times, and reduce any condensation from forming on the inner pane of your windows. Our slim double-glazing units give a u-value between 1.9 and 1.2 depending on the thickness of the spacer used and the amount of Krypton gas that is inserted in to the cavity of the double-glazed unit.

Question two will inserting slim double glazing alter the appearance of my sash windows and the answer is yes it will change the look of your windows, they will now look really sharp around the edges and very smart in appearance as the only thing we have to do to get the double glazing units to fit in your original sashes is the deepen the rebates about 4mm in depth, so when fitted they are hard to distinguish from single glazed sash windows but with all the benefits of modern double glazed windows.

We were very pleased with the restoration of some sash windows on our Victorian House. Although Kensington's had a fairly long waiting list, they arrived on time and very efficiently carried out the work, leaving the property clean and tidy afterwards. We would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Paul and his team are very professional, reliable, and highly skilled at their work. They gave us a detailed invoice for the windows, so all work and cost were transparent. We are so pleased that we were able to retain the look of our sash windows but able modernise them with double glazing and draught proofing. I couldn't recommend Kensington Windows more.

Excellent company offering a unique service. Saved all the unique features and appearance of our period hardwood windows, whilst improving their thermal performance by replacing the in situ single glazing with double. Gas filled cavity between double glazing is really thin so appearance wise its barely noticeable its in fact double glazing. Brilliant! On site operatives hard working, courteous, diligent and amiable. Can't recommend more.

My Victorian window project is bespoke. I wanted to retain my 170 year old pitch pine windows with a distressed wooden finish replacing the putty with beading and using old glass. The steps to achieve this are extensive. Having approached a number of sash window specialist companies I found they wanted to provide a 'fixed' product which did not meet with my aspirations. Kensington have embraced my objectives and have provided excellent work. They are always prompt and the communication is very good, something which I find lacking in the building trade. Fully recommend. Tim, Chester
